Lalime's career took a turn for the best when Ottawa traded Damian Rhodes away to the Atlanta Thrashers just weeks before the Expansion draft. Subsequently the Senators sent Ted Donato and the rights to prospect Antti Jussi-Niemi to Anaheim for Lalime. This was Patricks 1st real chance to secure a permanent NHL job. Patty was impressinve throughout the Senators training camp and earned the back up job to Ron Tugnutt. Tugnutt was injured several times through out th year and Lalime had to fill in as the teams #1. Lalime struggled with consistency but finished the year with a very respectable 19-14-3 record with a career best 2.33 GAA in 38 games. His 3 shut outs tied his career mark and his .905% save percentage was also respectable. But people still questioned his consistency when coach Jacques Martin publicly announced that Lalime would be the team's #1 goalie for the 00-01 season.
